AMA Leaders at the White House
On Monday, May 11, AMA President-Elect J. James Rohack, MD, and Chair-elect Rebecca Patchin, MD, participated in an event at the White House with a group of major health organizations that pledged to take steps toward reaching a common goal of curbing the nation's rate of growth on health care spending by 1.5 percent over the next 10 years.

Governor Perry Signs Two Immunization Bills into Law
Kudos to Senator Jane Nelson, the author of SB 346 and SB 347, both now signed into law. SB 346 establishes procedures to create a lifelong immunization registry in Texas. While Texas maintains ImmTrac, an immunization registry for children, there has not been a central registry fro Texans 18 years and older.
Identity Theft Red Flags Rules Deadline Extended until August 1
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted on April 30 to delay until August 1 implementation of its "red flag" regulations that require physicians and others whom the FTC considers "creditors" to develop written policies to prevent identity theft. Texas Electronic Registration (TER) System
In 2007, the Texas Legislature passed HB 1739 that mandates physicians complete all cause-of-death information and medical certifications electronically. Starting August 31, 2008, the state’s new online death registration system, the Texas Electronic Registrar (TER) system will allow physicians to submit the required information electronically at any time or location with internetaccess. Effective May 23, 2008 the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) now requires full compliance with the national provider identifier (NPI) regulations. The National Provider Identifier (NPI) replaces the multiple identifiers formerly used. With the NPI requirement now in effect, it is important to have the facts.
